Review - 21 Jump Street
March 14, 2012 ...
A pure buddy cop film with non-stop comedic beats, 21 Jump Street will keep everybody laughing. I'll admit that when I first heard of this reboot/reimagining I was not impressed. In a movie landscape filled with sequels and more unoriginal movies then you can shake a stick at, 21 Jump Street actually manages to pull off a funny and smart homage to an old TV show.
Having never seen the old TV show I had no expectations for Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum's bromance. Was the original such a best buds type movie? Who knows and who cares. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum were great. Especially Tatum who I felt shined as a very funny guy.
The story (as co-written by Jonah Hill himself) was incredibly well done as well. Much like Jason Segel's love and respect for The Muppets oozed out of that film, Jonah's can be see through out 21 Jump Street. And it's funny as hell. R-rated and proud of it, the story doesn't pull any comedic punches. It pays respect to the source, and humbly tries to walk with it, not copy it. Smart, funny, and exciting, the film emulates great buddy cop films while playing inside the 21 Jump Street formula . More reboots and remakes should strive to do what the writers did with this movie.
I'm definitely going to go see this movie again, maybe even in the theatre. I highly suggest you grab a friend on the 16th of March and do the same.
